Buzz Elias

Originally from Kansas and born in 1920, Buzz Elias was the son of a railroad telegrapher. He moved to Pueblo in 1926 where he pursued a career in journalism and attended Pueblo Junior College and Denver University.  He enlisted as a naval aviator during World War II and met and married Jean Armstrong, a Navy nurse.  They settled in Pueblo after the war and raised a family.  Buzz enjoyed many hobbies including flying, music, golf, writing freelance and travel.  He always wanted to help the nontraditional student to find a satisfying career by attending the Pueblo Community College.  Understanding how hard  it can be to raise a family studying for a career, he hoped to help numerous people by his endowment funded scholarships.

Walter & Martha Tooke Memorial

Walter Yerby and Martha Dell (Scott) Tooke were both born and raised in Texas but met and later married in Pueblo.  Both also attended Pueblo Junior College.  Walter went on to study Engineering at Texas Tech but left in his junior year to join the Army Air Corps where he served as a reconnaissance pilot and intelligence officer during WWII.  He achieved the rank of Lt Colonel during the Korean War.  Martha studied music at Colorado College and completed two years in opera training. They were married when Walter came home from the war and a year later Martha gave birth to twin girls, Katherine Joan and Kathleen June.   Soon after, Walter began his career work as a combustion engineer at the CF&I. Martha went back to school in her 40s to get a BA in psychology from SCSC, which led to her first and only job as a Welfare Caseworker which she held until she retired.  They faithfully attended St Paul Methodist Church where Martha sang in the choir and Walter taught Sunday school.  Martha passed away in 2004 and Walter joined her in 2011.  They lived modestly, loved deeply and left the world a better place.
